“The Carver”

While working as an arborist, James enjoyed the recycling of dead and diseased trees by carving animals for fun. After several years in the juried art show circuit, James’ talent was recognized by the art community while living in San Diego. James was accepted as a working artist and member of the Spanish Village Artist Guild in San Diego’s Balboa Park. He was one of the featured sculptors demonstrating at the 2009 “Art Splash “in Carlsbad, Ca. He liked the idea of trying a carving competition, so he applied to the Oregon Divisional Chainsaw Carving Competition in 2009, and was accepted on his merit as a successful artist. Since then, he has placed in the top ten, pro division, several times. He likes meeting fellow carvers at this event, sharing and learning new techniques.

He carves all subjects, and the challenge of custom pieces is what he enjoys doing the most. There are three ways to view his work. One, you can visit his shop at 1574 Salmon River Hwy Otis. (Best to call first, in progress setting up). We even now have a list of carvings he’s done in Lincoln City beginning with the tourist attraction at Hwy 101 and West Devils Lake Rd. Second, you can visit his website www.jameslukinich.com. Third, you can call 619-916-8459 to set up a private showing. He keeps busy doing custom work, both public art and private collections. His work can be seen all around Lincoln City, and in neighboring communities throughout the western states. Still with a following in San Diego county, he continues to make trips there each year. He resides in Lincoln City, Oregon with his wife Marilyn and their three huskies.

James believes in “Art with a purpose”. The removal of dead trees can be repurposed into art work, lasting a lifetime. You can find more of his work on Facebook and Instagram @james_lukinich.
